Fixing Sync Issues with nandub

I recently discussed using mencoder to transcode digital transport streams. However, I noticed a slight annoyance during playback. The video and audio weren't syncing, as seems to be the case sometimes when transcoding to Xvid or DivX. I'll give you a quick guide on how to use nandub on how to fix the problem.

Using MEncoder to Shrink High Def to xvid

As I've previously mentioned, I'm using a PCHDTV HD-3000 to capture High Definition ATSC transport streams. I can then use ProjectX to do basic snips and edits, as well as demux which program stream from within the transport stream I'd like to retain. Today, I'll talk about how to make MEncoder (MPlayer) shrink down your video to a handy DivX/xvid file.

ProjectX to Extract individual Digital TV Transport Streams

I stumbled upon this by accident. Previously, when I've wanted to record an individual HDTV stream for use elsewhere, I've been able to record the individual transport stream. However, an upgrade in some software I use caused me to capture an entire ATSC stream from a local digital channel. Not a problem, I was able to retain only the video and audio I needed, thanks again to ProjectX.

Cox Cable Phoenix offers Basic Cable in Unencrypted QAM

I've mentioned before that I've switched to DirecTV, essentially because Cox Cable (in Phoenix) is lacking technologically. A minor problem I observed on Independence Day alerted me to an enhancement that Cox has made to their service: Offering all the channels available in the Basic Cable Package available by way of QAM256.

HD to DVD: Removing commercials, Demux'ing with ProjectX

I recently posted an article telling you briefly how to tune and snag content from a pcHDTV HD-3000 (perhaps HD-5500) tuner card. Today, I'm going to talk about processing the transport stream a little further to get ready for transcoding down to standard DVD resolution.

HDTV to DVD: More on Tuning/Storing

The other day, I posted some information about using pcHDTV's HD-3000 card to record High Definition content and eventually converting it into a DVD Format. I didn't really go into the detail about working with the HD-3000 card (tuning for over the air broadcasts or cable). Today, I'll go in to a little bit more detail.

HDTV to DVD: Capture HD on your PC (and HD-5500)

Back in this thread, I mentioned the HD-3000 from pcHDTV. That was over six months ago, I've never really gotten around to explaining much more about it. Today, I'll explain basic hardware and software a bit more.

HD-3000, HDTV/DVB on Linux

Well, as you'll notice from the long gap between posts, something has been keeping my busy. You can blame that on my sudden interest in HDTV on a PC, specifically the HD-3000 from pcHDTV - which runs on Linux.

Creating "anamorphic" 16:9 in TMPGEnc

Rather than guessing at TMPGEnc's settings for clipping 4:3 aspect video to 16:9, an article at Mediachance.com told me the proper settings for this operation.

Here is how to set the encoding in TMPGenc Plus software encoder: Start with an NTSC DVD template which creates 720x480 MPEG-2 video. On the Video setting screen, select Aspect ratio 16:9 Display. This will set the flag to be 16:9 so thath the DVD player knows that it has to stretch the image. In the Advanced tab in settings, set the Video arrange method to Full Screen (no matter what it will stretch the image to full screen) and then in the filters below select Clip frame. Double-click on it and in the Clip frame tab set Top 60 and Bottom 60. The "Size after clipping" value should now should read 720x360 pixels.

Following up on DV Film Look, DV Film Maker Software

My previous post touched upon my efforts to make digital video (DV) look like film, or 24p style footage.

This past weekend, I tried the demo of DV Film Maker. It greatly improves on the aesthetics of my footage, further establishing the desired look I was trying to achieve. It improves my procedure by applying the look in pretty much one step. The price for a licensed copy is kind of steep at $145, but cheaper than buying Adobe Premiere and related plugins to achieve the same effect.

Working on DV "Film Look"

Aside from playing around with wireless security lately, I've also been looking to polish up my Digital Video (DV) footage that I have collected over the past few years.

FilmLook or Film Look (depending on who's talking about it) is the process of making video look like film. It's something I've been playing with for about the past year. I think I'm finally onto something.

Blu-Ray + Traditional DVD media Hybrid

I'm sure you've heard of Blu-ray, the new optical ROM technology that can potentially hold over five times more (50 Gig) than traditional dual layered DVDs (approx 9 Gig). It appears as though the discs (in addition to the players) will be backwards compatible.
